AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN

 WHAT WE DO:  SUPPORT EQUITY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS

 River Falls AAUW –  one of National AAUW’s 11 “5 Star” branches in the US in 2019-20 for outstanding accomplishment in

  • Programs
  • Advancement
  • Public policy
  • Governance
  • External Relations

 SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT AND WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

  • Provide $500 scholarship each year to Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC) student
  • Provide $1000 to a UW-River Falls student to attend National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) held each June in Washington, D.C. (AAUW member gifts and UWRF support enabled a second young woman to attend last year.)
  • Support scholarships and fellowships nationwide through contributions to AAUW national funds
  • Raise funds for these initiatives and serve our community through an annual used book sale

 SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) EDUCATION FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN

  • Co-sponsor annual Girls in Science conference held on the UW-River Falls campus
    • Give participant scholarships and other financial and service support to this day-long conference at which some 100 girls learn about careers in STEM fields
  • Math and Science Essay Contest
    • Continue a 10-year tradition of encouraging 8th grade students to research and write about a notable woman in math and/or science
      • $50 awards given to the writers of outstanding essays as judged by a panel of teachers
      • January awards luncheon features a keynote presentation by a successful woman with a career in a STEM field

 EDUCATION – PAY EQUITY AND LITERACY INITATIVES

  • Increase awareness of pay disparities for women through informational tables on Equal Pay Day* at UWRF and CVTC as well as through local media
  • Encourage members and college students to take Work Smart training developing career-long negotiation skills
  • Heritage Fund supports regional Literacy Education initiatives honoring lifetime member and River Falls educator Ethel Johnson

 PUBLIC PROGRAMMING & RECOGNITIONS

  • Offer informative presentations to the community at monthly meetings
    • 2020-21 topics include women’s financial and retirement planning, COVID19 regional updates and safety guidance, addressing systemic racism, social justice education through children’s literature, regional history, strategies for program and business innovation, and developing STEM careers.
  • Collaborate with River Falls Public Library on special events programming
    • June 2019 special exhibit and public lecture honoring the 100thAnniversary of Wisconsin Ratifying the 19thAmendment Granting National Suffrage to Woman.
    • Honor annually River Falls area women leaders (Not AAUW members) with Role Model for Equity Awards – public recognition with $100 stipends

 PUBLIC POLICY

  • AAUW non-partisan efforts inform members and public about policy issues that impact the lives of women and girls
    • Sponsor public informational candidate forums prior to local and state elections
    • Promote issues awareness through national AAUW’s Action Network and encourage communication with legislators on AAUW policy priorities

INTERNATIONAL ISSUES

  • Keep members apprised of international equity issues through regular reports in our monthly newsletter

RESEARCH ON WOMEN’S ISSUES

  • Inform branch members and the public of cutting-edge research findings
    • New AAUW research on women in manufacturing; women in health care; and pay equity data reflecting race, ethnicity and gender. Continuing research on women in community colleges, sexual assault, student debt, women’s leadership, and STEM opportunities for women.

NETWORKING AND FELLOWSHIP FOR BRANCH MEMBERS

  • Encourage and financially support members’ attendance at annual state and national AAUW conventions which provide issues education and leadership development
  • Enhance members’ personal connections, social interaction and fellowship through special social events and holiday gatherings
